Emika’s crowdfunded project has finally been revealed as Melanfonie and will release on her own Emika Records at the end of January.

Melanfonie took four years to produce and it was initially inspired by the “Dem Worlds” track from Emika’s second album, DVA, on which she collaborated with soprano vocalist Michaela Šrůmová from the Prague Metropolitan Orchestra. Emika was astonished by Michaela’s talent and brought her on the adventure of composing together.

The project, which began as a Kickstarter campaign, inspired Emika to return to her classical roots and compose her own symphony. Securing Šrůmová and the Prague Metropolitan Orchestra for the project, Emika has moved the low-end instruments to the focal point of the attention, and separated the violins. Her symphony doubles the bass players of a traditional orchestra, an unconventional flourish that provides a new take on an old arrangement.

“I still feel that the image accompanying classical music is one of the upper class,” says Emika. “Golden dresses, major labels and rich sponsors. The way classical music is presented on stage and its entire position within global music culture has very little connection with its creators.”

Emika Records will release Melanfonie on January 31st, 2017.
