Over 15 years ago on November 2003 rapper China Mac (back then known as Gkay) walked into, the now closed, bar Yello in NYC’s Chinatown district. China Mac was upset after his then-girlfriend was locked away in prison, and seeing a man who he thought stabbed him a couple months before on the same day. After heated altercation with man Mac suspected stabbed him, he entered bar Yello where MC Jin was having a night out with his affiliates, including another Asian rapper Cristopher “LS” Louie. China Mac, who was already agitated after previous altercation, started arguing with Jin and LS and ended up pulling out a gun and firing, hitting LS in lower back. After the incident Mac went on a run for a year before getting apprehended by police and spending over 10 years in prison. During that time MC Jin moved for a couple years to Hong Kong where he gained popularity and achieved major commercial success.
MC Jin returned to New York City in 2012, a year before China Mac was released on parole. Unfortuantely for Mac he was accused of violating his parole terms and sent back to prison until 2017 when he was released again, this time permamently. The two men were now in the same city, and bound to meet. Instead of avoiding each other they decided to sit down man to man and talk about their past. The idea was to record it and show the world how people can grow and move past conflicts.
The video you will find below is the conversation they had 15 years after events in bar Yello. It’s an hour long video, and probably one of the most inspiring conversations I’ve seen in my life. Definitely a must watch, even if you’re not familiar with either artist or don’t listen to hip-hop at all. It’s a mature dialogue between two men who show us that we can grow and move forward in life no matter what.
