So mysteriously I got sent one of the most exciting promos I have ever received into my email box a week ago. Since then I have been enjoying what I feel will be one of the releases of the year.

The Antonym EP is by Dublin producer (or producers) Faws. I can’t reveal little more than that at all. I did ask Faws if they would be up for an interview, to talk about the music that they have producer to try and get a better understanding of who they are and what they are coming from but I received a polite reply of no.

“I’m not really interested in interviews or anything like that, just keeping the music as music, nothing else. Would be great to have some of the tunes played though!”

and thats that.

Succinct and a perfect message. Let the music speak for itself and it does. This 5 track EP is brilliant.

It opens with Take Notice, a haunting melody that evokes Burial at his finest. Thats not to say that they have ripped Burial off, just that thematically and in tone the productions are kindred spirits. The pitched vocals and the floating riffs work really well as the organs rise and fall.

The next track Camille is a down tempo joint, stylistically like some of RJD2’s hip hop but with its own flavour. The use of sub bass certainly points to hip-hop influences but the interplay between vocal samples marks this as a cut above most productions. The song is like stumbling into a lovers fight that has been played out countless times between two ghosts.

Paper Jams is another low energy, moody tune. Using answering machine messages to convey a sense that something bad has happened to someone and we are witnessing the growing concern for them. The song builds to a false crescendo and then fades to a off-putting finish.

Worries is a fantastic piece of music based around a simple repeated riff and a Tom Waits sample talking about not worrying about achieventments, “I worry primarily about whether there are night clubs in heaven”, finger clicks and the sounds of a metronome keeps the song ticking over. This song interjects on the album when the darkness needs to be lifted but in a true tip of the hat to Tom Waits its black comedy the breaks the mood. The worries are laughed off but not completely, not really.

Empty bottles closes out the EP with creaking, groaning sounds of ratchets and gears turning. When the bass drops the song starts to move and develops. I found myself wanting more from the tune and the EP as a whole.

Faws have created a release that is so coherent in use of tone and style that it can be compared to The Weeknd’s House of Ballons. It doesnt have the stand out vocal performance that drove the Weeknd’s release to the heights it achieved but the production work and the appreciation for space and sounds is on a par.

Its not just Burial that influences Faws, self confessed influences from Mos Def stand alongside artists like Old Apparatus and RJD2. The Antonym EP ranks alongside some of these producers best works. I for one am eagerly awaiting the next email from the Faws camp.
